The what and the why...
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a totally different way of getting your vegetables that cuts out the middleman and connects you directly to one farm and one farmer. CSAs allow people to have direct access to high quality, fresh produce grown locally by regional farmers. Even though many grocery stores offer "local" produce, these often come from long distances. The farm where we get our vegetables from is in Andover, NJ. About 45 minutes from Fair Lawn.
Why Join a CSA?- Access to ultra-fresh, locally grown produce
- Learn about new fruits and vegetables - Significant cost savings compared to buying organic at the store or Farmer's Market |
- Farmer John regularly holds potlucks where you can meet lots of great people
- There many opportunities to visit and volunteer at the farm and see how and where your food comes from |
Why Local is ImportantDo you ever think about where those bananas come from or those off-season blueberries? It takes a lot of carbon to transport food across the world to get to our table. While we can't eat local all the time, when we join a CSA, it significantly decreases our carbon footprint.
